Official Review of Carrie's Secret by Paul Backalenick

A psychological mystery revolves around the Genesen family, the sudden disappearance of the oldest daughter, Wendy, and strange changes in the younger one, Carrie. Her eventual transfer to a mental health institution led to various meetings with shady, unstable, and violent characters: both patients and workers. Worst of all, the kidnapper is also on the move to kill her. The novel is written in third-person POV, this offers a great insight into the thoughts of each character/patient involved while interlacing a first-person POV in diary form detailing thoughts of the killer’s movement throughout the story, which is very interesting. Some freaky sexual narration by the killer should be noted but no triggering assaults happen. Readers will surely become invested in the turning of the event, especially during the climax and disturbed by some final words at the end of the novel. The story also shows unjust yet lenient police procedures prominently when investigators were too confident in

Official Review of Development by Paul Backalenick

A family fiction novel well narrates the life of the Latour family in the early 70s and the strained relationship among the family members with the husband Hank stuck in debt, his wife Norma became cold and alcoholic, and the two self-absorbed teenage daughters (Dora and Amy). The author does a great job not only in captivating readers into his characters’ lives, their developments, but also in unfolding unanticipated turns of events as the story progresses. He has a knack of turning readers overhead just as they think they know how the story will unfold. A well-paced debut novel with a firm storyline and modern, succinct sentences making it an easy read that also offer great insight into the life of a struggling family. It is a story of trials, tribulations, hopes, disappointment, and survival. Rating: 4/5

Official Review of Unicorn Farmhand by Samuel Yaw Jian Fong

An interesting novel about growth and life journey from a unique perspective, using literary device to personify Dok Saau, a horse (unicorn actually) with the ability to write and communicate in human language. Throughout the story, Dok Saau proves his intelligence and ambition to understand the distinctiveness of human beings, their cultures while staying true to his charming, witty nature and remaining loyal to his adopted owner, Cheng Gao. Although past experience sometimes disorients his present perception, his struggle, this aspect of Dok Saau has convincingly displayed the similarity between humans and animals, that we can understand each other if we strongly desire to bridge our differences and care for each other. It should be clear that even without personification as in the case of Dok Saau, animals can feel various emotions and do amazing things, and we, as fellows of just different species should strive to do the same for them, just as how Dok Saau does for us. The world in

Official Review of Hajogana by Samuel Yaw Jian Fong

An action-paced novel about the journey of HajegÅ«n Banerri Pilusari, a half Imdegab humanoid from Konjor, climbing the hierarchical ladder from working as a Gaantegeu lieutenant of Jerde under General Pangaros (Supercorporation’s official) to becoming Vice Governor of West Luril working for Governor Vannikon Bezagro after escaping brutality and mistreatment at Samozari Resort. These experience and his natural benevolence shape his belief in slavery abolishiment and diplomatic approach to maintain high quality of life for Lurilo citizens. In some way, the novel’s theme reflects our history fighting and bleeding for equality despite the resistance and violent attempt to subdue insurgency. The ending feels a bit rushed, however, the camaraderie bonds shared between individuals with similar beliefs and compassion for the weak is well highlighted to deliver the key takeaway; kindness between individuals can transcend the differences imposed by society. OUR OFFICIAL REVIEW OF `FRIENDS` BY GARY HOPE

Life is an adventure, even when you’re pushing seventy. Written with a lot of passion, ``Friends`` by Gary Hope is a coming of age story for the grown-up kid in all of us. At sixty-nine, Bill and Allen had lived their lives; love, marriage, divorce, and kids but at the cost of their wild, carefree years. And now their lives seemed to be at a standstill. So, on a whim, the two men decide on a road trip that takes them across the country. Well, Allen makes the decision, showing up with a rented vehicle to take on their voyage of self-discovery. This is because while Bill is a divorcee, Allen is a widow. The two enjoy each other’s company, carving out a path of good clean fun complete with comical banter.
