A family fiction novel well narrates the life of the Latour family in the early 70s and the strained relationship among the family members with the husband Hank stuck in debt, his wife Norma became cold and alcoholic, and the two self-absorbed teenage daughters (Dora and Amy). The author does a great job not only in captivating readers into his characters’ lives, their developments, but also in unfolding unanticipated turns of events as the story progresses. He has a knack of turning readers overhead just as they think they know how the story will unfold. A well-paced debut novel with a firm storyline and modern, succinct sentences making it an easy read that also offer great insight into the life of a struggling family. It is a story of trials, tribulations, hopes, disappointment, and survival. Rating: 4/5
